I watched an interesting program about Japan’s secret WWII atom bomb program on the History Channel earlier tonight. Although it is common knowledge that Germany had its own atomic bomb program, the Japanese one is much less known.
Just after the Americans started their Manhattan Project (code name for the building of the atomic bomb), the Japanese started theirs.
Apparently, there were two independent projects, one by the army and another by the navy. The first one was conducted in Tokyo under the famous Japanese physicist, professor Yoshio Nishina. The second one, headed by Professor Bunsaku Arakatsu, was conducted in secrecy in North Korea. (Korea was chosen because there were prisoners of war available to build underground facilities and uranium was readily available.)
The one in Tokyo ran into difficulty because Japan had hardly any uranium for any significant work. In desperation, they contacted their allies the Germans for a shipment of about 550Kg of uranium. (The Germans did not put much of an effort into their Atomic Bomb program since Hitler dismissed the notion as "Jewish Science"–Einstein, Oppenheimer and many other nuclear physicist were Jewish.) The American, having broken the enigma code and the Japanese navy code, knew about the shipment. I.e. the Japanese’s atom bomb effort was not a secret to the American Military Intelligence. However, the Americans did not realize the Japanese were very close to building a bomb.
The shipment of uranium was aborted when Germany surrendered. All ships at sea were to surrender themselves at the nearest port. The U-boat carrying the uranium shipment was near Canada but the Americans jammed the Canadian airwaves and set their own ships to intercept the sub. That also shows that the Americans were very well aware of what the cargo was for.
The Tokyo effort collapsed after the American fire bombing of Tokyo destroyed the thermo-separator so crucial to the distillation of U-235 (needed for the atomic bomb).
After the Americans dropped two atomic bombs in Japan, the naval group in Korea was asked to step up their effort to produce a bomb. But nothing came out of it and Japan surrendered.
After the war, a credible journalist reported that he had interviewed a Japanese Intelligent officer who claimed he had witnessed the naval group denoted their first atomic bomb on a ship anchored off North Korea. That report, however, was not substantiated. The Russians entered North Korea and took away the Japanese physicists and everything they saw. North Korea was closed to the west since then so no one from the west was able to went and check the alleged test site for radioactivity.
When Japan surrendered, the research institutes burned all their papers. Japan was doing a lot of unethical military research, which, if proven, can get the participating scientists prosecuted as war criminals. One scientist secretly passed one lone document detailing the research effort in the Atomic Bomb Project to one Kazuo Kuroda. He, along with many other Japanese scientists, were recruited to teach and do research in the USA. Several of his graduate students at the University of Arkansas were shown this documents during social gatherings at his home. After Kuroda died in 2001, his widow made the document public.
I found a detail description of this historic event on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_atomic_program If interested, please have a look. If you have a reference to a Chinese article, please post.

Observation: At this point I would like to voice a long held gripe of mine. I came across some people on various Chinese BBSes who are strongly anti-Japanese, but who, at the same time, are great admirers of the Nazis and Adolph Hitler. Some forums even had "Hitler" as top honour in their hierarchy of membership. I am shock to see this double standard of moral attitude. Had the Germans and the Japanese won the war, they would have divided up the world for a few years, and eventually, will fought each other over the dominance of the whole world. No matter who might have won, we would all have been killed or become slaves.
