Pod of whales strands again
12.00pm Saturday November 11, 2006
Volunteers and DOC staff are waiting for high tide to try to save a pod of pilot whales stranded at Uretiti Beach near Waipu.
It is believed they are the same animals which stranded yesterday at Marsden Point Beach and were refloated late last night.
DOC staff are calling for more volunteers with shovels, towels and buckets to help with the rescue mission.
50-60 whales are stranded on the beach, and some volunteers and DOC are already at the scene.
It is hoped the animals can be pushed back out to sea on the high tide at one o’clock this afternoon.
